I was very concerned to hear of the sudden closure of the Drum Brae Post Office earlier this week. I took immediate action by getting in touch with the Post Office to raise the matter with them and urge them to re-open a Post Office service in Drum Brae as soon as possible.
As constituents will be aware, there have been other Post Office branch closures within the Edinburgh West area over the last few years, so I was – and continue to be - keen to ensure that all efforts were made to stop any further closures in my constituency.
The services provided by the Post Office are vitally important to local communities, and I was particularly concerned about the impact on those individuals who would be unable to travel to the nearest alternative branches in Davidson’s Mains and Corstorphine.
I have also met with the Post Master of the existing branch and I am actively involved in trying to bring the matter to as swift a conclusion as possible.
In the meantime, the Post Office have assured me that they view this closure as temporary and that they are committed to maintaining a Post Office service in the Drum Brae area.
I am encouraged by this news but will be continuing to push for a quick solution to ensure that residents regain local access to Post Office services as soon as possible. Over 300 people have signed a petition set up by local residents to protest about the closure, and it is very clear how much local people value this service.
Constituents have also raised concerns about the continuation of the Post Office service in Kirkliston. Again, I have raised this with the Post Office who have stated that they are also committed to providing a Post Office service in the Kirkliston area, and will seek an alternative venue for their facilities if the current Post Office does close.
If you have any concerns you wish to raise on this matter, please do not hesitate to contact my office. I will also post an update as soon as I receive any further information from the Post Office.
